Lindsay area schools compete against each other at the Kawartha Region Engineering Challenge

On March 21, Lindsay Collegiate and Vocational Institute (LCVI) hosted the Kawartha Region Engineering Challenge.

The annual event takes place across Ontario and invites senior secondary students to work in teams to tackle a real-world engineering design challenge, while also giving them the opportunity to gain insight from professionals in the engineering field. This event is run by the Professional Engineers Ontario and Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).

This year’s competition saw 15 teams of four participate from LCVI and I.E. Weldon Secondary School (IEWSS).

In the morning, each team was given a materials kit and budget to design, build, test, and modify a bridge within the given timeframe. The bridge was to be designed to be loaded and tested by the Belleville Buster, and include a road deck that was a flat even surface which a small model dump truck could be pushed across. Teams were required to purchase any additional materials needed throughout the build, which then determined their cost/load ratio after testing for scoring at the end of the competition.

In the afternoon, the bridges were put to the test using the Belleville Buster and awarded points for the truck passing across the platform and the weight of the load.

Below were the results:

  • First place team – IEWSS Team 5 – Anna Tran, Chelsey Pongo, Lucy Stephenson, and Kyle McDonald
  • Second place team – IEWSS Team 7 – Benson Corley, Evan Worboy, Greg Murray, and Hayley Michael
  • Third place team – LCVI Team 10 – Brooklyn Peeters, Nia Patel, and Zoya Baig
  • Most cost effective design (highest load/cost ratio) – LCVI Team 12 – Angeline Home, Jayden Lewis, Sophie Rychel, and Zeus De Leon

Thank you to the event volunteers, which included representatives from OACETT, D.M. Wills Associates, Toyota Canada Inc., Engage Engineering Ltd., Professional Engineers Ontario, the Peterborough Chapter of Professional Engineers of Ontario, and PRI Engineering.

TLDSB school and transportation status update – April 3, 2025

We are pleased to share that most TLDSB schools and child care centres within schools will be open tomorrow, Thursday, April 3. See the list below for schools that will remain closed due to infrastructure and/or power outages. If your child(ren)’s school is not listed, it is open.

Transportation information

Transportation is running in Zones, 1, 2, and 3, but there may be disruptions to individual routes. Parents/guardians are encouraged to sign up for notifications via mybustoschool.ca and check for individual route delays and modifications.

Transportation is not running in Zones 4 and 5. The reason for this difference is because the communications tower that provides services to the bus company is out of commission. Therefore, transportation is not possible until the communications have been restored.
